When is Valentine’s Day of 2024: Meaning and History

February 14th is celebrated as Valentine’s Day (or Saint Valentine’s Day, the Feast of Saint Valentine) every year.

It is a public holiday in many places, particularly in the Western hemisphere, but it is still considered a workday elsewhere unless it falls on a weekend. Valentine’s Day was originally a liturgical festival commemorating one or more early Christian saints named Valentine. Poets a few centuries later added the current romantic overtones.

During Geoffrey Chaucer’s social circle during the flourishing period of courtly love in the 14th century, the day became associated with romantic love.

In 18th-century England, it became a time for couples to express their love for one another by exchanging flowers, sweets, and greeting cards (known as valentines).

In Europe, Saint Valentine’s Keys are given to children to prevent epilepsy (also known as Saint Valentine’s Malady) and to lovers as a loving gesture and invitation to open the giver’s heart.

Today, Valentine’s Day symbols include the outline of a heart, doves, and the image of the winged Cupid.

Since the nineteenth century, mass-produced greeting cards have largely replaced handwritten Valentines.

Its alleged origin is the Catholic Church’s celebration of Valentine’s Day in 496 A.D., a day set aside to honor patron saints. This served to eclipse and then replace the ostensibly cruel Pagan feast of Lupercalia. On February 15, a celebration honoring the Roman God of Agriculture, Faunus, was held to mark the beginning of spring. The sacrifice of a goat and a dog represented purity and fertility, respectively. Following the ripping of the goat hide into strips, the women and crops were painted with the sacrificial blood.

According to historians, the idealized aspect of Valentine’s Day as we know it today began with a priest who was killed by Emperor Claudius II Gothicus in or around 270 A.D. Despite the fact that several Valentines are associated with the patron saints day. Stories about several Saint Valentines differ; some say one was secretly marrying couples to keep men from going to war, another was healing the blind, and the third wrote a letter to his daughter addressed as “Your Valentine.” Additionally, it is possible that they are the same person!

The day was first associated with romance in the 1400s. Valentines, as the messages were called, began to appear. Love declarations in handwritten letters and poems became increasingly common. Valentine’s Day cards began to be mass-produced in the middle of the nineteenth century, and traditional gifts included sweets and flowers, particularly red roses, which represent beauty and love.

Valentine’s Day is now observed with friends and family to show your affection and concern for them. Businesses have jumped at the opportunity to time their goods and services around Valentine’s Day in order to capitalize on the seasonal sales surge, which continues to grow year after year.
